Muyinga in northeastern Burundi has a mild climate and rich volcanic soil ideal for coffee growth. The Cooperative Nkamwayacu, meaning “our dairy cow” in Burundian culture, was established in 2006 by local farmers. By 2012, it merged with seven cooperatives forming COCOCA, a coffee growers' union. With 335 active members, they oversee coffee production from cultivation to fermentation. Their coffee, a fully washed Bourbon, grows at 1400-1550 masl. Beyond coffee, the cooperative invests in quality enhancement, audit training, and organic manure from cow husbandry. They plan to expand with vehicles for transport and offer more community programs. They've been fairtrade certified since 2013.
