For the latest chapter of ‘Community Always’, we’re connecting with our neighbors at Angelwood Pies in Leederville. What started as a post-hike idea in the Perth hills has grown into a definitive ode to the classic Australian bakery, built on a foundation of quality ingredients and sustainable sourcing from local farmers. This commitment to craft recently earned Angelwood a spot in the WAGFG Top 100 for 2025. The atmosphere in-store is driven by the warm, steady grooves of artists like Otis Redding, Al Green, and Christopher Cross, the music serves as a backdrop for the community to gather. This Saturday from 8:00am to 10:00am, we’re hosting a record pop-up at 663 Newcastle Street, serving a collaborative HAL x Angelwood Kare Kare Pie inspired by the Filipino oxtail classic. It’s a morning defined by the work of local growers and the intentional sounds that bring the neighborhood together.

What inspired the creation of Angelwood Pies and what makes it unique?

Richard first thought of the concept after a hike in the Perth hills while eating an underwhelming pie, his wife mentioned that he'd make a better one and the idea stuck! Angelwood is our ode to the classic Australian bakery, and we love the ability of pies to share so many classic dishes and cuisines that you may not always be able to showcase on a single menu, but which just make sense when wrapped up as a pie. We make our products with a focus on quality ingredients, authentic recipes and sustainable sourcing of ingredients, which makes our pies unique. Not to mention our coffee, it’s not often that pie shops are known for their coffee game!

We've had some great collabs and pop ups in the last year, and our highlights include being named in the WAGFG Top 100 restaurants for 2025 as well as celebrating our first birthday a few weeks ago. Exciting other things coming up include a deep dive collab at Mane, collaboratively working with some exciting farmers and producers, and expanding where our pies will be available (more information to be released in the future!).
