Founded amid the upheavals of East Berlin in 1990, the OSTKREUZ agency emerged at a pivotal moment in history. For Dream On – Berlin, the 90s, nine OSTKREUZ photographers, in collaboration with curators Annette Hauschild (OSTKREUZ) and Boaz Levin (C/O Berlin Foundation), revisit their extensive archives through a modern lens.
At the height of photojournalism, these documentarians captured Berlin’s transformation—its shifting society, cultural evolution, and the challenges of reunification. Through powerful and deeply personal images, they documented a city once divided by a wall as it found its way back together.
The accompanying essays offer varied perspectives: Janos Frecot explores changes in the urban landscape, Jens Balzer examines Berlin’s rise as a creative and cultural hub, and Anne Rabe, a young East German writer, reflects on the city’s present through a deeply personal lens.
OSTKREUZ is an independent Berlin-based agency, now home to twenty-four photographers.
