Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 9 in 1993, during Michael Jordan's first retirement from the NBA to play minor league baseball, making it the first Air Jordan signature never worn on-court during its original run. Rather than relying on MJ's dominance on the hardwood, Nike leaned into his global influence, incorporating words inspired by Jordan in languages from Japanese to Swahili across the outsole. Two years after the shoe's original release, Jordan starred in Space Jam, wearing the White / Black / True Red colourway during the film's gym scenes, cementing the Air Jordan 9's place in pop culture. The 2026 retro marks the sixth return of this colourway, timed to Space Jam's 30th anniversary, with OG proportions restored and the classic MJ face box packaging included.
