Tyondai Braxton left Battles after Mirrored, and most bands don't recover from losing their vocalist. Battles responded by making an album that barely needed one. Recorded as a three-piece at Machines with Magnets in Rhode Island and released on Warp Records in June 2011, Gloss Drop is a record built on rhythm, texture and pure forward motion, 53 minutes of math rock that refuses to stay in one place for long. Where vocals do appear, they arrive as another instrument: Matias Aguayo chanting through Ice Cream, Gary Numan's machines threading through My Machines, Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead lifting Sweetie and Shag into something else entirely. This is the 2016 Warp repress, pressed on heavyweight vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.
