Chopova Lowena’s latest collection is inspired by wartime weddings and the rocky sea. The duo’s subject matter once again perfectly captures the brand’s winning formula for clashing soft with hard; the whimsy of dreams with uniform practicality.
During their research process for this collection, the designers unearthed photographs of WW2 military couples and took note of the view outside their Deptford studio of the River Thames; the old industrial fixtures, boatmen rigging up, the river’s brown murky water and gritty pebbled shores.
They had just moved into their new studio. The 1940’s had intrigued Emma Chopova for a while now, and Laura Lowena’s was getting deep into military camo research, and then there’s their mutual love for the open sea, so it was a natural progression, the timing just perfect, to gather their references and cast their spell to tell us a beautiful story.
This season, we see 1940s silhouettes offset by nautical influences like tough denim, mariner netting and hardware resembling the rivulets, buckles and bolts found on boats. Their fitted jersey shirts have cutesy love motifs, inspired by the sentimental keepsakes that wives would sew for their husbands at war. And as always, Chopova Lowena prioritizes sustainability. All their clothing is made out of holistically sourced recycled materials and the clever utilisation of deadstock textiles.
