Dubbed as 2023’s 'shoe of the summer' by sneaker lovers in the northern hemisphere, 2023 has undeniably been heralded as the year of Adidas, in particular the year of the Adidas Samba. At the end of 2021 the Samba was slowly gaining notoriety, eventually Instagram mood boards and niche fashion influencers caught on to the compact yet timeless Adidas silhouette. Notable English fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner with her unique fusion of Afro and European aesthetics revolutionised the Samba by providing various colourful renditions that achieved cult-status popularity. Noticeably the Samba hasn’t been the only Adidas silhouette to gain popularity, with similar renditions such as the Gazelle, Campus, Spezial and Bermuda entering the streetwear market. The Adidas Gazelle is often referred to as the younger, chunkier rendition of the Samba, interestingly both sneaker silhouettes evolved from the sphere of indoor football in 1968. In the following years the Gazelle began to make an appearance on the terraces of football stadiums, particularly in Europe and quickly became the sneaker of choice for casual terrace culture.
